Daily affirmations of a word mercenary
Taxes
Damn, I am really getting fucked on taxes this year. Using good ol’ Turbo Tax, somehow my 1099 from Amazon DOUBLED my taxes. I went from a ghastly (but do-able) $846.00 pre-Amazon, to an obscene $1658.25 (which includes some sort of “underpayment fee” due to something I don’t understand). It’s so much that I’m seriously going to an accountant to see if they can find something I’m missing.
I mean, I guess I shouldn’t be shocked, but I am. I freelanced in 1999, too, but not as much as 2000. Last year I had to pay, like, $250 in taxes. And I thought that was a lot. This year I have to pay the amount of a small used car. FRACK! Any other freelancers out there who are used to this? I’ve tried the usual things (deducting rent, etc), but my standard deduction is $4,400 which is more than I can find on my own.

Hey there. I'm Ariel Meadow Stallings, a native Seattleite who's written my way up and down the Left Coast. Electrolicious is where I post daily randomata, but I also write for a living. My first book, Offbeat Bride, is in bookstores now.
