Skitter
I had a close call yesterday. I was walking down to the Y to work out, wearing my sunglasses in the bright October glare. I decided to jaywalk across Madison (a four lane through-street), and as I skittered across the road, I heard a little clatter behind me. Half way across the far lane, I glance back and saw that my eyeglasses had fallen out of my pocket. I stopped, and started to dash back to grab them, then realized there were cars coming up the hill.
And so I stood, in the middle of the East-bound lane, watched car after car in the West-bound land drive over my (very expensive) glasses. By some act of good fortune, the glasses had fallen out of my pocket near the middle of the lane, meaning that each car went directly over the glasses, their wheels just barely missing them. I was totally beside myself, hopping from foot to foot watching every car go by. Drivers were staring at me–what was I doing standing in the middle of the road? I’m just REALLY lucky that there were no cars coming on the East-bound side, because otherwise my squished glasses would have been the least of my worries.
Finally, there was a break in traffic, and I dashed across the road, plucked my beloved geek-o-specs off the cruel asphalt and hopped back the sidewalk, already sweating under my gym clothes. I was very, very lucky. There’s no way I could afford new glasses right now.
