My Dad
November 20th was my father’s 59th birthday (!! Wait, wasn’t I 7 and he 40, like, yesterday?), but we didn’t get to have a little family birthday dinner thing until Monday night. It was me, my mom, my godmother, and my dad, and we had a nice time. However, my mother realized that we hadn’t had a birthday toast to honor my father, and sent out the email calling for such. And so, here’s mine, exactly nine days after the fact.

Here’s to a father
Who’s a closest confidante and dearest friend.
Here’s to a father
Who’s ear I like to bend.

Here’s to a father
Who used to always read out-loud.
Here’s to a father
Who doesn’t mind if I stick out in a crowd.

Here’s to a father
Who’s dirtier than I am.
Here’s to a father
Who practices Zen.

Here’s to a father,
Who likes to talk media, news, and technology,
Here’s to a father,
Who’s just as inclined to theology.

Here’s to a father,
Who adopts my wayward friends,
Here’s to a father,
Who’ll be with me ’till the end.

Here’s to a father,
Who’s consistently both tested me and stood up to my tests,
Here’s to my father,
undoubtedly the best.
