Daily affirmations of a word mercenary
So yesterday I bought my ticket to Los Angeles, today I woke up sick. Love that. Hopefully I’ll be all better by Saturday evening.
In other news, I’ve gotten several emails this week asking me how I survive as a writer. Here’s the simple answer:
Writing for a living has been very lean these last six months. For a couple years I had a great little scheme worked out with copywriting, doing my word whoring just enough to scrape by, but having plenty of time to do my other writing. The last six months, I’m afraid, have proven that little plan doesn’t work any more. I’ve been temping to make ends meet. And it sucks. Did you want coffee with that?
Basically, the way to survive as a writer is to write anything anyone will pay you for (for godsake I paid my rent in November writing SPAM, or, as they called it: viral marketing). Yes, you whore your skills and write about shit you aren’t passionate about, but you also keep your word muscles in great shape, and can put “WRITER” on your taxes every year. I love it, myself.
Hey there. I'm Ariel Meadow Stallings, a native Seattleite who's written my way up and down the Left Coast. Electrolicious is where I post daily randomata, but I also write for a living. My first book, Offbeat Bride, was published last year.
