I have just returned from a day of double feature teen movies with Jane. First up, with a course of excellent Jane-made sundried tomato pesto pasta: 10 Things I Hate About You, filmed in Seattle and actually a pretty good flick. Choice line? “MY BALLS!”
Next up, with a dessert of ice cream, raspberries, and maple syrup: Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Amazing that such a campy, tacky, excellent study of early-’90s fashion and bad writing spawned two Oscar winners (Hilary Swank and Ben Affleck), and the markedly un-campy or tacky Buffy TV series empire. Can anyone think of another example where a TV show spin-off of a movie was more serious and higher budget than the original?
