An S.U.V.? Oh, That’s So Over! [NYT articles via Anil]
This article reminds me of the last time I saw Chris, my boyfriend from ‘92 – ‘95. Chris had always been a Ford sort of guy, driving either an F150 pickup or your typical Explorer SUV. But when he picked me up for dinner last fall, I was stunned to see a silver Mazda Protogé outside! I was always the one who drove a Mazda (at least, until I switched over to Hondas), and here was Mr. Big Ford with a little…well, station wagon.
I got into the car and bugged my eyes out for extra effect. “Oh my GAWD, Chris. You’re driving a fuel-efficient station wagon!”
“Please, Ariel,” he said as he smoothly shifted into second gear, “It’s a sports wagon.”
Hey there. I'm Ariel Meadow Stallings, a native Seattleite who's written my way up and down the Left Coast. Electrolicious is where I post daily randomata, but I also write for a living. My first book, Offbeat Bride, is in bookstores now.

Gen, I have deep car envy. Ever since I had to abandon my Honda Civic station wagon, I’ve been a sad driver. (And you’re gutsy to wear a white jacket in NYC!)

Ariel, if you saw all the bills associated with my owning a car in the City, you’d be happy without one. Insurance in NYC is outrageous (easily 4X the national average), parking is anywhere from $200-$600/mo, not to mention the crazy yellow taxis, trucks and black radio cars that you have to dodge. It’s insane. I have to own a car due to my work situation, and I love my car and the freedom it gives me, but it’s very costly.

I can imagine. My car costs when I was living in San Francisco were obscene. That said, it’s still a pretty car.
…That said, I’d still probably place a Honda Civic Hybrid at the tip top of my “fantasy cars” list.

hahah. That’s hillarious about Chris! I wouldn’t be surprised if he took a small offense to your comment and went and bought a new Ford!

From the NYT article: “I like the stealth aspect of my car,” Mr. Joseph said. “It doesn’t look like a sports car, but it performs like one.”
and I prefer the stealth aspect of my car, a retired police cruiser. Stripped, repainted, still sportimg the driver side spot light, awesome handling and a top speed of 145.
Sire it sucks a lot of gas, but it’s a rush to see all the other drivers move out of the way when I show up in their rearview mirror. Now that the cops drive Fords, they respect my Caprice and they are wave as I speed by.
