My aunt, upon receiving a thank you card from me, called my mother to tell her that I’d obviously been raised well. My mother was stunned. “You send thank you cards?!” she asked me. How did I become such a well-mannered thing? I explained to her that if you send thank you cards, you increase your chances of getting more and better presents in the future. Well-mannered, MY ASS!

i have the same line of thought.
i always send thank you cards for gifts i receive. and it does work; each year i’ve gotten better gifts from those i’ve thanked.
