If the pigeon gestation period is 19 days, that means our porch pigeon should be hatching any day now! Jacqueline and I have a little arrangement…I only water the plant she roosts in at night and I talk to her in her native tongue (French, naturellement!). In return, she just sits there while I water the plant. It’s remarkable, really. I coo in French and she hangs out while I slowly pour water into the pot, just inches away from her, ensuring that the water soaks into the soil instead of flowing underneath the nest.
I wonder if baby pidgies are cute?
Update, June 2005:
Hey everyone coming to this page from Google: I am not a pigeon expert. I don’t know anything about baby pigeons. Please stop posting questions! I can’t help you.
Hey there. I'm Ariel Meadow Stallings, a native Seattleite who's written my way up and down the Left Coast. Electrolicious is where I post daily randomata, but I also write for a living. My first book, Offbeat Bride, was published last year.

hey ariel: long time no talk, glad you are well.
anyways, i can tell you, from an experience with a pigeon nest on my own window ledge, that baby pigeons are definitively NOT cute. they are bald and veiny and apparently not too bright, as our own little one (nicknamed ugly) eventually beat himself to death on the window he was born next to while trying to learn to fly. it was a sad day and a very disturbing image.
rip ugly.

Wow! Jessica! For those keeping track at home, Jessica and I worked together in Seattle at MJ Feet, the Birkenstock Store from ‘95 to ‘96.
Sad story about Ugly…I hope our baby pidge (who’s name will be Jacqui, of course) fares better.

Does your webcam reach the planter? You need the hatch-cam!

having raised pigeons commercially for 10 yrs i can say that 65% of all baby pigeons are cute, 30% are not cute and 5% are not committed.

The webcam doesn’t stretch that far, sadly, and my digital camera was sent back to Fuji for repairs several weeks ago. Not much to see, really…just a pideon with her feathers fluffed to full capacity, sitting in a large potted plant. It is cool, though, how the plant almost seems to be growing OUT of her.

Ok, I’m late on this, but please don’t call the baby jacqui. Because
1- Jacqui doesn’t exist.
2- You don’t want to be called a Jacky.

I had a pigeon lay a few eggs on my balcony but a crow came and ate them. It was like the Amityville horror on my balcony. Will the pigeon lay more eggs in the same nest? Do pigeons lay more than one cluster of eggs a year?
Thanks

I’ve got a little mother who has made a nest on my porch light. I haven’t turned on my porch light ever since I noticed the nest because I don’t want to fry her eggs. It’s been about 3 weeks now and I’m wondering how long before I can safely use my porch light again? Also, I’m discouraging visitors from using the front door because I don’t want to disturb the mother. Help! How much longer will I be without the use of my front door?

Baby pigeon about 3 weeks old on our porch. Woke up this am and noticed it was limp… and not breathing! Doesn’t appear injured but clearly it has died. What happened? (mom and dad pigeon were very vigilant parents. Still sat on it after ot was born though)
