Food to add to “cravings” list: a fish taco from Baja Burrito down on the boardwalk. TW had one today and boy, did it ever look good.
One thing I’ve been denied during this cleanse that I am not missing? Alcohol. I know that Dre’s been agonizing a bit, missing his beloved beer, but when TW and I went to Charlie Temmel this afternoon and she ordered a big huge stien of hefeweizen, I was more than happy with my cup of juice.
The fish taco, on the other hand… Drat. THAT was temptation.
[Also, interesting article about food politics]
Today I did something different: I had breakfast instead of lunch.
Breakfast:
Fruit salad with almond milk
Dinner:
That amazing hummous with carrots and celery. Might not sound exciting, but that hummous! Goo’ness. Amazing. I did a little research and found that my beloved sprout table at the farmer’s market is run by none other than “Jazzy Sprouts.” Here’s a little story lifted from this page:
But one of the highlights of the morning for me was Jazzy Sprouts. Dexter Scott has been growing sprouts in Reseda for the last ten years. He sells them at 18 markets throughout Southern California. When I asked about the name Jazzy Sprouts, he smiled and proudly told us that he raises his crop with jazzy clarinet music. Scott retired from the army band after 35 years and then took up sprouting.Z: We smiled and nodded enthusiastically when he asked if we wanted to hear him play. He then removed a soprano sax from a case that looked like it had been through two world wars and began a spirited rendition of In the Mood. He paused to show us his picture in an article “Buying the Farm” that appeared in the May/June issue of Westways Magazine. Then he continued with a few bars of On a Clear Day You Can See Forever and La Cucaracha for one of the Hispanic patrons. When Reuben won the rose, he swung into a romantic version of La Vie en Rose.
R: We were so carried away with the music we almost forgot to mention Dexter’s sprouts. We were impressed with the biggest selection of sprouted items we’ve encountered. He sprouted every kind of bean you could think of, but the most unusual were the peanut sprouts. Of, course, Zel had to take home a scoop at the bargain price of $1. He had wheat grass and barley grass and even sold 1 oz. containers of juice from both. Zel was brave enough to taste the barley juice even after he warned us it was bitter. Ugh!
Z: Bitter is putting it mildly! I normally like the bitter vegetables, but I must admit that barley juice is the strongest, bitterest stuff I’ve ever had. I know it’s healthy, but I’m not rushing back for seconds! After we finished our purchases, we gathered up our bundles and headed back home.

What? Charly Temmel? I thought it closed…? At least the one on Third Street Promenade did… it closed and turned into one of those stores that sells crappy sweaters, like the ones you see foreign tourists wear.
Now I’m curious. I miss Charly Temmel something serious… I was so bummed when I found out that it closed that my frequent trips to LA became abruptly INfrequent…

I am currently doing a week-long sprout cleanse. I can only have sprouts–as many as I can handle, and then half of a cucumber per day and one bowl of miso soup with celery, cilantro, seaweed, and garlic. It’s awful. I know all about making lists of food when you’re cleansing. I do that, too! I can’t wait to be done! Three days left!
