Had a friend once end up in emergency then ICU with a massive brain hemmorhage. The docs weren't sure if he'd still have his mental faculties when he, IF he, woke up. But he opened his eyes, realized he couldn't talk because of the tube in his throat, and decided to communicate by harking back to elementary school ASL alphabet days. That was pretty exciting, not only was he there, but that he could remember something like that. Go communication, yeah!
