Daily affirmations of a word mercenary

How funny is this? I temporarily disabled my firewall to download a large file from a friend. While I was eating dinner, up popped a nice li’l bit of messenger spam! Remember messenger spam? I haven’t seen any in months, thanks to my super-sonic firewall, but get this:
I got some messenger spam advertising some messenger spam-blocking software!
No joke! Up popped a little alert window informing that if I didn’t ever want to see messenger spam again, I should go to fightmessenger.com, where I could get some software to stop the very spam that advertised that which the software blocks.
Oh, and did I mention that the software costs $20?
In other words, you can pay $20 to stop something that you can stop for free by following a few simple steps. Fightmessenger.com says that, “After doing a little research I found the only way to block these spam messages from ever appearing on my screen required doing extensive tweaking and configuring of my computer.” It’s just a few steps! How is that “extensive tweaking and configuring”? It’s remarkable how exploitable the un-tech-savvy make themselves.
Then again, I suppose the same could be said of me and my car.

Cheryl, I don’t think that’s messenger spam. You should run and install SpyBot. Sounds like you’ve got spyware.
