Exactitudes: absolutely facinating. Especially this one. It’s unsuprising to see how those who try to look the same often do — but it’s really interesting to see those who try to look different look so similar. [via Maggie]
Hey there. I'm Ariel Meadow Stallings, a native Seattleite who's written my way up and down the Left Coast. Electrolicious is where I post daily randomata, but I also write for a living. My first book, Offbeat Bride, was published last year.

a ha! that’s just the photographic evidence i needed to back up my statement from thursday about people all looking alike no matter how hard they try to look different. once in a while i see a true blue original, and it’s so refreshing. very interesting link!

I dunno why it’s so bad to look like other people. How different do we expect old guys in swim trunks to look? Is it really desirable to be so different that no one on earth looks anything like you? Humans are social animals, and clothing is just one aspect of language. If you do things to yourself that are utterly different, no one will understand you. It’s like calling someone a conformist for speaking English, instead of babbling in a tongue of their own invention.

I can only speak for myself, but I agree with you, donut. Then again, the hunt for individuality is part of the American culture, and outward appearence is an expression of that desire for individuality.

Fashion, as all fit memes do, bring people together. Ariel, I think the “unique individual” label as well as the “one of the crowd” labels we give ourselves serve the same purpose: Connecting With Others! The Rebel acts just as predictably as the Yesman. The photos show (to me) the fact that these people did not make their own clothes. Now, if you really want to fit in, get a tattoo.

i think for me it’s not that i think it’s “bad” to look like someone else - it’s unavoidable. it’s those punk asses out there who think that they *are* truly being unique and original and shove it in your face as if to prove a point that they’re cooler than you because oh look! they have dreadlocks and lots of piercings and you’re just a commoner and so you suck! that bother me. i think the fashion culture of the world is fascinating, and i don’t care one way or the other how other people dress. be who you want to be. but for it’s those who purposely section themselves off (Ariel, you must see tons of this in LA) and judge others by their outward appearances that i was referring to.
