Daily affirmations of a word mercenary
Here’s a video of the hooping workshop at GoTT today (340 MB .mpg). The conference was good, complete with a former UN representative, and other well-versed important people talking to us. There was a happy three-legged dog. It was held in a great space. Lots of interesting people to talk to. Oh, and I stood up and said something about democratizing the media with weblogs. It was good. I am tired. Good night.

Mmmm, democratizing? After reading Perry’s opinion on Samizdata, I’d say it just created a larger base of reporters and opinions. I don’t think this could be called democratizing the media. I don’t mind - there are many times I’d treat a blogosphere analysis with more respect than a news media treatment, but the marketplace analogy fits very well. We have no say in what others write, but we can vote with our eyes and our clicks, just like our dollars and our attention in the real world.
That said, I still love blogs and the freedom that they tend to grant information.

Kara: Yes.
Ryan: Yes, democratizing. By enabling people to have a voice through their online writings (a voice that’s potentially searchable and accessible by anyone in the world), it not only increases the numbers of perspectives and contributors to the information flow of the planet, but it also creates a culture of healthy media skepticism, ie don’t always believe what you read, whether it’s on myblog.com or cnn.com.
That said, I haven’t read the articles you linked, so perhaps my mind will change.

OK, I see your point.
On a tangent, I love the skepticism and sense of investigationism that blogs have created, and the Internet has allowed. If you don’t believe something, there is an easier way to verify it now, if you want. Many of the ways may have been there before, but they’re easier to access now for someone who wishes to do so. And in this, democracy and full discussion live on. As long as we keep fighting for it.
