Do I have any female readers who are interested in trying Instead? You can read my experience with the product here, but it’s not typical. Many folks absolutely love these things. I have a box to get rid of, so if you’ve always wanted to try an alternative menstrual product, email me (her AT electrolicious DOT com) your mailing address and I’ll send you a sample or two. I don’t want to throw them away, but I also don’t want drag one more box of little things I’ll never use up to Seattle.
Hey there. I'm Ariel Meadow Stallings, a native Seattleite who's written my way up and down the Left Coast. Electrolicious is where I post daily randomata, but I also write for a living. My first book, Offbeat Bride, was published last year.

The e-mail address doesn’t seem to be working! It says “her” doesn’t have an account at electrolicious.org. I think it’s the “org” part that made things wacky. Just a heads up.

Oops! Yes, it’s .com. I fixed it. Thanks for the heads up! What would I do without my trusty readers?

Ariel, I’m sure someone as inventive as yourself could find a good use for such objects. A costume perhaps? I would love to see Auntie Flow incarnated as a red-bedecked fairy godmother flitting about at Halloween this year, impressing some and horrifying others.

I love the Auntie flow costume idea! Since your main argument was the waste factor, what do you have to say about the Keeper? I’m thinking about getting one, but what if you have to take it out in a public restroom? It’s not like you can go up to the sink amongst your fellow bathroom users to washi it out…

Terra, I’ve never used the Keeper, but my friend Amy Leblanc is a HUGE proponent. Here’s what she had to say about it. I’m tempted to try.

Another Keeper lover here… It’s been five years and counting, and I’ll never go back.

Taking the Keeper out in a public restroom may be a great opportunity to educate other women about it. I heard a great story recently about a woman who used a menstrual sponge and hollered from her bathroom stall: “Coming out with a bloody sponge! If you don’t want to deal, the leave now!” Apparently, there were some interested observers checkin it out. I thought this was a great way to role-model to women that its OK to touch and deal with menstrual fluids in a matter-of-fact way. So GO FOR IT!

the Keeper makers offer this idea for public restrooms, which work for me whenver i’ve had to do it: take 1 or 2 wet paper towels in the stall with you, and then you can just wipe it out. that works pretty well. but in general, i only have to empty it twice a day, and that’s usually in the shower in the morning and then at the end of the day after i get home from work anyway. i rarely have to deal with the public restroom problem.

I am a keeper user and lovin it. Not only is it a great product but it just feels good not to be using something so wasteful and to stick it to the pad and tampon companies.
