A friend of mine who has seen perhaps a half dozen movies in the last five years, just signed up for Netflix and asked me for my recommendations.
Thought y’all might be interested in the list.
Donnie Darko - crazy mindfuck slightly scary sci-fi
Hedwig & The Angry Inch - awesome punk rock transexual musical
Finding Nemo - geniuinely sweet animated flick
Being John Malkovitch - weird drama but very very good
Spellbound - All about spelling bees, and one of the best movies of 2003
About A Boy - amusing british comedy
Best In Show - by the same dude who did spinal tap, hilarious “mockumentary” about dog shows
Pirates of the Carribean - Johnny Depp as a swishy, slurry pirate! Big budget and GREAT!
Human Traffic - AWESOME british comedy about ravers/clubbers
The Fast Runner - Slow, quiet, brilliant Inuit drama
Ram Dass Fierce Grace - touching documentary
Spirited Away - universally regarded as best anime of all time
Rabbit-Proof Fence - Austrailian adventure movie about aboriginal girls
Galaxy Quest - Hilarious sci-fi satire skewering Star Trek

And what about non-english speaking movies…? Say, for instance, Almodovar’s Habla con ella, Wong Kar Wai’s In the mood for love, Lars von trier’s Dancer in the dark, Nicolas Philibert’s Etre et avoir, or Robert Guédiguian’s Marius et Jeannette ?

mmm, mostly my faves too, although I would have thrown in Wag the Dog if it were my list. No wonder we’re friends - similar tastes!

Philippe, Dancer In The Dark is my most LOATHED movie of ALL TIME. I hated that movie with so much vitriol that I could melt metal with all the acidity of my despisement.
And wait: Dancer In The Dark is in English! I included two non-english speaking movies in my list: Spirited Away and The Fast Runner.

i *loved* Best in Show - i think it was his best so far (i can’t even remember the name of the most recent one, but it was not the greatest - something about Wind)…
also, anything with Depp gets my vote, lol - my all-time favorite Depp is Edward Scissorhands tho!

I beg to differ with your description of Donnie Darko.
It is not sci-fi (lacking any trappings of hard science), but philoso-fi in my book.

Let’s just say I strongly disagree with Air’s assessment of Dancer in the Dark and leave it at that. Also, the best anime of all time is Oh My Goddess!, not Spirited Away. And you owe it to yourself to check out Secretary, too. That’s all.
