Tonight I watched Whale Rider and was stunned by Keisha Castle-Hughes in the lead role. Then I got online and noticed that today she was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar, becoming the youngest nominee ever.
Cool!

Amazing role, inspiring movie. Here’s hoping we see her again soon.

Isn’t she wonderful? That movie, man. Talk about emotional! I read an entertainment blurb that claimed Julia Roberts had to leave the theater during Whale Rider because she was sobbing so loud that it bothered the other patrons. I wasn’t quite that bad, but dang. Of course, at my theater there was a soft, reassuring chorus of whuffles and sniffs all around.

I must disagree. Paquin was 11 when she won. Keisha is now 13.

From what I’ve read the youngest nominee overall was 8 (the boy from kramer vs. kramer for supporting actor). The youngest winner overall was 10 year old Tatum O’Neal for Paper Moon.
That all being said - damn, not bad for an 8, 10, 11, and 13 year old! I don’t think I had won a scratch ticket by that age.

Ooh I hope she wins! I thought she was absolutely amazing in that film. However, I could not get over the dramatic resemblance she holds to my cousin Tricia. It’s eerie. I guess they say everyone has a twin…

She was brilliant in that movie, I truly, truly hope she wins. She wasn’t even an actress before doing this movie, either! She was just a little girl in a grade school they went to to recruit. This is her first role ever.
