Daily affirmations of a word mercenary
So, I’ve been listening to the new OutKast double album non-stop. Well, I should clarify: I’ve been listening to The Love Below constantly, and Speakerboxxx sometimes.
Every day, I have a new favorite song on The Love Below. Yesterday’s song was “Dracula’s Wedding.” I love the concept of Dracula sneaking around his castle, terrified of only one thing: his new bride. I wait my whole life to bite the right one, then you come along and that freaks me out, so I’m frightened! Ooh!
You know I’m terrified, Dre 3000/Dracula whimpers in falsetto, interrupting himself by gasping, Shh, shh! Here she comes!
Then Kelis makes her entry, calling out for him: 3000? 3000? You can almost see her wandering the halls of Dracula’s castle, looking for Dre 3000 as he cowers behind a column somewhere. Kelis then does her little thing, singing punnily about don’t run, I’m not the sun. So much at stake — oh! Bad choice of words! Her short section finishes, Plus, I make great peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Van Helsing!
After getting over the random humor of Dracula’s bride making sandwiches (WTF?) I started wondering to myself, “Van Helsing? What the hell is that? Some clothing label? Some cultural reference I’m too white to understand?”
So, I did what any geek would do: I googled it. And oh-ho-ho! Looks like a little clever marketing soundtrack tie-in! Van Helsing is a movie staring Hugh Jackman, as “the famed monster-hunter” from Brahm Stoker’s “Dracula.” And will you look at that: there’s a website, already advertising the flick which doesn’t come out until May.
This album came out late last summer, which means that this soundtrack tie in with Outkast, complete with the very subtle name dropping (some lyric listings have the misheard the words as “Van Heusen”), started getting the word out almost a year before the movie will be released.
Very, very clever.
I think today’s favorite song is “Behold a Lady.” I just love it when he says, “Clap, clap!” It reminds me, in a weird way, of Phish’s “Stash.”

Van Helsing is actually a character from “Dracula”. I think the movie coming out is about the character from the story.

Um, isn’t that what I just said?

you should also really really really check out The Coup for some totally kick ass NorCal hip hop, with a great socially-conscious edge. they are by far my fave hiphop act these days, with Outkast coming in second.

Oops. I guess that’s what I get for mostly skimming while I’m at work.
But, I also didn’t see how you were convinced it was a marketing tie-in and not just a reference to the Dracula story. Are the music label and the production studio the same company? Don’t get me wrong - I am aghast at the sneaky tricks that adverisers use on us. I just don’t see such a strong correlation I guess.

Um, no… it’s a literary reference. So what if there’s a movie coming out by that name? Outkast probably didn’t even know that. I think it’s more than a bit cynical to assume it was a marketing ploy.
Now you could argue: Aha! A literary reference! Now foolish, gullible teenagers will all go out and read a great and culturally important work of fiction! The bastards!
But by and large, I approve of literacy, so I would not argue that.

Hmm, so I guess my cynical thought is that it’s a movie tie-in (as in Dre’s track “Love Hater“) … but Donut is right: it could genuinely be a literary reference. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if the song is included on the soundtrack when it comes out.

While I agree that Van Helsing’s probably just a reference to the classic (what was the ‘Duckula counterpart called? Van Gooseling?) I wouldn’t put it past those sneaky marketing piglets to slip it in on purpose… other recent eyebrow-raisers: Alicia Keys has the audacity to ask “Can you hear me now?” wihle on her cel phone in her recent hit, and Jewel came out with “Intuition” - along side a simultaneaous endorsement for ‘lady razors’ of the same name!
Its enough to make you fkking paranoid.

and, without even listening to the album (i’m at work, cursing i didn’t bring it with me today), i automatically get “spread” stuck in my head.

damn. I went to say that I think Stroking My Indignation is a brilliant post, and the discussion was closed. Nevertheless, I will be heard:
That’s a fine post, Ariel!

hey the line about “I make great peanut butter and jelly sandwiches” is a reference to the Count on seseame street. i just relized this so i’m telling everyone. don’t laugh if ya’ll already figured that out.
