Daily affirmations of a word mercenary
I have a vague feeling that I should be writing some sort of vacation recap entry, but I just don’t have it in me. The photo gallery should be online within the next couple days, and that will have to suffice.
I will say this: Andreas and I were gone for almost three weeks. It really feels like we should have gotten MORE out of that time. I mean, yes: we went to many different places. But a lot of what we did was just hanging out. We hung out with my family and my friend Travis in SF. We hung out with friends in LA. We hung out with Dre’s family in Maui. Then we hung out in Honolulu. The only place we didn’t hang out was Kauai, and we were only there for four days. We tried to pack three weeks of doing into four days, but I’m not so sure if that’s possible.
After an almost three-week trip, I feel a little guilty for not having done more. This sense of dissatisfaction is a waste of time because hell: we saw a lot of places and did a lot of things and spoke to many fantastic people. But three weeks is enough time to traverse many European countries. It’s enough time to sink into a whole different culture. It’s enough time to do some serious relaxing. But somehow, three weeks covered lots of time with two different families, me getting the flu, days of flying and driving (15 hours to SF, 2 hours to LA, 3 hours to PDX, 5 hours to Maui, 1.5 hours to Kauai, 1.5 hours back to Maui. 1 hour to Honolulu. 5 hours back to Portland.), and a generalized sense of not making the most of it. That said: I did read three books. We got in some good cribbage game. We hung out with some wonderful people who I don’t get to see nearly enough of. I need to stop whining.
However, I vow to make better use of my time when we go to France and Italy in May. I want that to be a three week trip, too.

yeah stop yer whinin’ - although it’s pretty hard to sink into a culture in only 3 weeks had you stayed in one place you might have gotten to know a few locals - but… holiday season never seems to work out that way. hell tho i’d take four days in hawaii any day (then i’d mutiny so i didn’t have to come back).

It was!! Thank you so much for gifting it to me! I’ve passed it on to Andreas now, and he’s absolutely loving it as well. Full of interesting perspectives for an agnostic like me, and a zoo-hater like Andreas. Thanks again.
