A couple years ago, I donated $40 to Planned Parenthood. After a few months, I wished I could take my money back because it started to look like every cent of it was going towards direct marketing mailings that showed up several times a month. Planned Parenthood not only buried me in junk mail, but they also sold my address to other organizations who then sent even more junk mail.
Don’t charities understand that they’re actually DISUADING me from donating again? It’s so stupid. I don’t want my money to go towards filling my own mailbox with crap! Grumble.
Hey there. I'm Ariel Meadow Stallings, a native Seattleite who's written my way up and down the Left Coast. Electrolicious is where I post daily randomata, but I also write for a living. My first book, Offbeat Bride, was published last year.

The same can be said of left-orientated publications. I once subscribed to the Progressive and soon found I was receiving three solicitations A DAY from various liberal organizations (from the ACLU to ZMAG to Jim Hightower). The comment I made to my wife was “Who knew being on the left would be so bad for the environment?”

if it makes you feel any better, I get tons of junkmail from PP and I’ve never donated a cent.

never ever donate with your address. you will be killed with direct mail. its why WWF lost my donations. now i just contribute direct from my paycheck through my work. no junk mail and all the self-righteousness i can afford!

it especially irks me that enviro orgs do it. i have a nice but a bit testy little fill in the blank letter that i send back to them in their own SASE pointing out that sending mass amounts of junk mail really undermines their whole “save the trees” campaign or whatever they’re lobbying for, and that i won’t be donating to them again.
