On Saturday I went to grab a new shirt for this two-week copywriting gig I’m doing. As usual, I poked around the Juniors section. Nothing. It was all low cut jeans and t-shirts that said things like “Princess” and “Bitch” and “If there’s grass on the field, let’s play ball!” Then I wandered past the Women’s section, and suddenly there were things I liked. And they all fit me.
I suppose that 15 months from 30, I shouldn’t be surprised that I bought a shirt from the Women’s section, but it’s taken me almost two days to come to grips with it. What’s next — Metamucil?
Hey there. I'm Ariel Meadow Stallings, a native Seattleite who's written my way up and down the Left Coast. Electrolicious is where I post daily randomata, but I also write for a living. My first book, Offbeat Bride, was published last year.

I’m sure you don’t mean women’s *sizes*. Was it the misses dept? some name that the store made up?

Omigosh, I have so been there recently! I had to go to the Bev Center and buy a SKIRT SUIT, for chrissakes, for a law school job interview. Why in the world do I want to look like a lawyer?
Anyway, I checked Max Studio, French Connection, Banana…and ended up at Ann Taylor. Talk about feeling my age. I even got an Ann Taylor credit card (in order to get 10% extra off my purchase). I’m still wearin my X-Games shirt, tho. Lawyer or no.

ah, yes. similar things have happened to me recently, and i find myself saying things about “junior” fashions and teenage styles that i swore i would never say. 15-year-old girls are looking very trampy these days. although, perhaps the reason why i’m still getting carded for alcohol is because i still wear baby tees and low cut jeans and pigtails. i just hope someone lets me know when i start crossing the line between looking “young” and looking like a 30-year-old woman in 18-year-old clothes.

OK - I will admit, going through the realization that it is no longer appropriate to wear clothes from the junior department can be a traumatic event - it does not however, equate to metamucil consumption.
My only hope is that some creative soul hears our screaming plea for help and is able to make a living helping us all look fab. I think it’s a serious issue for our generation. We don’t want to look 18 AND we don’t want to look like a conservative prude. I don’t think that is so much to ask do you?

there’s so much out there in terms of indie design that’s cool and not at all 15 year old trampy or 45 year old matron. really original and unique and hip-yet-not-trying-too-hard-30ish-but-still-get carded stuff. what sucks is that it’s all so expensive! $75 for a shirt? $200 for a pair of pants? how much for shoes? grr…

i agree with sarah, how is it that by stepping into grown up clothes that you will find yourself unexpectedly hurtling toward metamucil and denture cleaners.
perhaps you might find that when you hit your 30’s…it’s all about clothes that fit your body…and accessories like cool knit hats and WARMIES!!

Hmmm…I can’t really comment fully on this, being 19 myself and a male, but I must agree. I have found that women don’t have much of a choice when they reach that late-20’s or early-30’s. I have found that most of the things girls my age wear is rather revealing and even though I may be male, I don’t care to see every girl’s belly-button, cleavage(practically the entire boob(s)), or their ass crack. Someone needs to get their butt in gear so that you ladies can look good! Before you go there, no I don’t mean ladies in the “old ladies” sense.

i echo yara - i shop a lot (wayyyyy more than i should), and most stores that have really fun, trendy, but not trashy clothes for late-20s early-30s are seriously expensive. Urban Outfitters is as close as i get to shopping in those stores. it’s all about “recycled” clothes for me - but then you have to spend hours and hours going through the racks at vintage and used clothing stores, which can be really time consuming…..
i should just go back to my baggy cords and phish t-shirts phase and forget all about looking good.
