Daily affirmations of a word mercenary
“Donnie Darko,” a cult drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a disturbed teenager, is getting a new theatrical release, featuring 20 minutes of never-before-seen footage.
Newmarket Films, which released the film in 2001, is unveiling a director’s cut at the Seattle Film Festival on May 29. It plans to release the film theatrically in Seattle before moving into other markets later in the summer.
FUCKING AWESOME. I can’t think of a movie that more deserves a re-release. And if the DVD is any indication, the director’s cut will be amazing. So many crucial moments were deleted from the original theatrical release — especially the scene where Donnie’s therapist tells him that she had him on sugar pills, and that there’s nothing wrong with him.
It’s been interesting to see the delayed response to this movie. Gary Jules’ song from the soundtrack, “Mad World,” has been in heavy rotation on several Seattle radion stations in the last few months…despite the fact that it was released in 2001. It’s so rare that indie films get a second chance — and I’m so glad that Richard Kelly has made it happen!
(Thanks to Brodie for the heads-up on the re-release.)

So is this ‘unseen’ footage not an extra on the DVD, or is it just ‘unseen in theatres’? Haven’t seen the movie yet (a friend just told me about it last week), so this looks like a great opportunity for my first viewing of Donnie Darko. From the description & some quotes I’ve read recently, this almost certainly will have go to on my ‘Big-Ass List of Recommended Movies’.

Several people told me about this yesterday. I’m psyched. I didn’t see DD in the theatre when it first came out, so excited about the potential to see it on the big screen. Still waiting on the big date with Rich…maybe he’ll take me to see this?
I first saw Gary almost 2 years ago at the Hotel Cafe and have been a fan ever since. Jules Rules. YAY!

Hey, I’m glad you are all as excited as I am. DD is maybe the sleeper hit of the decade. AND YES! the dvd had so much more interesting footage than the original. This will be great.

hmm. i am going to be the contrarian here and say that i really didn’t think donnie darko was all that. i have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of people like the movie precisely because they don’t understand what it was about. it’s like david lynch, who i also don’t like much…for a lot of people, lynch’s unintelligibility equals genius. to me, it just equals unintelligibility. and the same goes for donnie darko.
however, i’d love to be convinced of its greatness…so ariel, and anyone else, please don’t think i’m pooh-poohing your opinions/tastes… i would just like an explanation of dd from someone who loves, and feels they understand, the movie.

If you’ve seen the DVD, then you understand the core of movie. Much of the enigma of the original film version is due to CRUCIAL scenes being omitted from the film…in error, I think. The DVD includes The Philosophy of Time Travel book that is referenced so often in the film, and it explains a lot.
Like most sci-fi, there are a few leaps of faith to be taken (why metals and water? I don’t know…), but if you watch the DVDs and all the extras (director’s commentary, deleted scenes, book text) the movie makes pretty close to perfect sense.
I really don’t like David Lynch … as a filmaker, Richard Kelly makes way more sense to me.
