If you've seen the DVD, then you understand the core of movie. Much of the enigma of the original film version is due to CRUCIAL scenes being omitted from the film...in error, I think. The DVD includes The Philosophy of Time Travel book that is referenced so often in the film, and it explains a lot.

Like most sci-fi, there are a few leaps of faith to be taken (why metals and water? I don't know...), but if you watch the DVDs and all the extras (director's commentary, deleted scenes, book text) the movie makes pretty close to perfect sense.

I really don't like David Lynch ... as a filmaker, Richard Kelly makes way more sense to me.

hmm. i am going to be the contrarian here and say that i really didn't think donnie darko was all that. i have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of people like the movie precisely because they don't understand what it was about. it's like david lynch, who i also don't like much...for a lot of people, lynch's unintelligibility equals genius. to me, it just equals unintelligibility. and the same goes for donnie darko.
however, i'd love to be convinced of its greatness...so ariel, and anyone else, please don't think i'm pooh-poohing your opinions/tastes... i would just like an explanation of dd from someone who loves, and feels they understand, the movie.

Hey, I'm glad you are all as excited as I am. DD is maybe the sleeper hit of the decade. AND YES! the dvd had so much more interesting footage than the original. This will be great.
