In part to deal with the occupational hazards I wrote about recently, I’ve decided to switch to a standing desk at work. Although my adjustable-height desk here at The Paper has always had the option of being a standing desk, it wasn’t until I moved cubes (side note: I can now see a window! a tiny, six-inch tall sliver of window! WITH SKY!) that I decided to take the plunge.
Yesterday I did a little research, and today I made the switch. I’ve been standing for almost two hours, and so far, so good. I anticipate that I’ll toggle between standing and sitting, but it’s really nice to feel like I’m actively using muscle groups to hold myself up, instead of slumped over inert in a chair.
Hey there. I'm Ariel Meadow Stallings, a native Seattleite who's written my way up and down the Left Coast. Electrolicious is where I post daily randomata, but I also write for a living. My first book, Offbeat Bride, was published last year.

What about the balance ball you used to use? I know that standing like that would hurt my lower back, so I don’tknow how you do it!

somewhere at home i have a page torn out of a magazine that has little exercises meant just for a cube space at work. not necessarily to become aerobicizing worker bee, but just to keep from getting bored now that you’re standing. i’ll send it along if you want.

What’s cool about standing at the ‘puter is you can get a workout at the same time: for instance standing in horse pose or any standing yoga or chi gung thing.
