MoveOn.org: United, Not Divided
Congress is about to vote on amending the U.S. Constitution to deny marriage equality to same-sex couples.
Never before has our Constitution been amended to take away anyone’s rights. Yet our Senators will vote on this amendment in the next 48 hours.
It’s urgent that we speak up now. This hateful divisiveness has no place in America.

I’m keeping a close watch on this myself. I sent word to my senators, and please, people, do the same!

I also sent word to both my senators, by both email AND phone. Everyone who cares: get off your butts and take the few minutes to call or write your senator! Even if your senator already opposes the bill, they need to hear that their peeps are in agreement.

This is an awful amendment, clearly politically motivated, and it should be fought vigorously. But what’s the deal with MoveOn? Do they really think they lend credibility to their cause with absurd statements like “Never before has our Constitution been amended to take away anyone’s rights”
I’m not exactly a constitutional scholar, but I can tell you that’s not true without even consulting a reference. The 18th amendment took away the right to drink alcohol from every person in the US (the 21st brought it back), and the 16th amendment (federal income tax) could easily be construed as “taking away someone’s rights”. I’m almost certain google could provide more examples.

Cameron, you are right on with your comments. This amendment is a horrible idea (and since has lost in the Senate), but organizations like MoveOn.org that make untrue statements of fact about important issues are a detriment to the cause.

It’s true that MoveOn is a little over the top in their language. That said, sometimes it takes some over the top language to rally apathetic troops.
