Daily affirmations of a word mercenary
Do you compost? Then I have a question for you: What do you use as your kitchen-side compost receptacle? We have a great compost bin outside, but inside we’re reduced to a yogurt container to hold food waste. I’d love advice on compost containers that are a bit bigger and a bit less…transient looking.

If you have any friends who work in a kitchen or are waiter-types, a one or two gallon bucket works great (smaller than the regular size square buckets). That way you don’t have to run out to the compost every three seconds. Or buy a small bucket of cat litter for a friend who has a cat and take the bucket.

i can’t believe i actually have an answer to this (welcome to oregon, dori!) but…
we use a really cool old plant stand with a big, sealable plastic bucket set into it.
it looks really cool and works well…

There are special countertop compost buckets that have a filter in the lid so that air can get in/out, but stink does not. this prevents anaerobic decomposition, which can really smell up the joint. They’re over priced and don’t really work any better than any other bucket, but they come in a pleasing GREEN color.
see them here:

I second the green compost bucket with filter. I used to have one when I lived in SF and it worked really well. It was similar to this one:

My mum just uses a small garbage can (the kind you keep in your bedroom or whatever…). Cheap and easy!

Plow and Hearth (http://www.plowandhearth.com) sells a “Compost Crock”. It’s either stainless steel or white and holds 1 gallon. Here’s a link directly to it: http://tinyurl.com/5yjzn
We compost and I’ve been meaning to get this for a while now too…

Janece’s recommendation works quite well, we had it at our old house in Palo Alto. It’s heavy though
and can’t be lifted too easily. You might need to wash it out too now and then.

i am a big fan of putting compost waste in the freezer (in a plastic container or bag). that way: no smell, out of site… etc.

i like to use a yogurt container in the freezer. it won’t stink if it’s frozen. then you just run it under warm water when you’re ready to take it outside, and everything slides out nicely. Plus, who looks in your freezer?

We use a small white garbage can that mounts on the inside of our under-sink cabinet door. That way, as we are making dinner we just open the door, pop open the lid (which keeps the smells in) and drop stuff in as we go. Very easy. I was doing the yogurt container thing until this summer and went crazy having to empty the thing two or three times a day into the big bin out back.
