We use a small white garbage can that mounts on the inside of our under-sink cabinet door. That way, as we are making dinner we just open the door, pop open the lid (which keeps the smells in) and drop stuff in as we go. Very easy. I was doing the yogurt container thing until this summer and went crazy having to empty the thing two or three times a day into the big bin out back.

i like to use a yogurt container in the freezer. it won't stink if it's frozen. then you just run it under warm water when you're ready to take it outside, and everything slides out nicely. Plus, who looks in your freezer?

i am a big fan of putting compost waste in the freezer (in a plastic container or bag). that way: no smell, out of site... etc.

Janece's recommendation works quite well, we had it at our old house in Palo Alto. It's heavy though
and can't be lifted too easily. You might need to wash it out too now and then.
