Daily affirmations of a word mercenary
1. I’ve decided that The Ffectometer is the built in editorial reflex for whether you want to type “affect” or “effect.” My Ffectometer is pretty broken, but I’m working on it.
2. My father works three blocks from me, and this morning I had the pleasure of running into him on the sidewalk. This was extra exciting because I got to shout, “Dr. Stallings! Dr. Stallings!” and wave my arms around like a crazed fan.
3. Are you still using Internet Explorer to get on the web? Why, my friend, WHY? If you’re still not sure about Firefox, just go ahead and watch this news broadcast (.wmv file). Then go get firefox. The first time you use it, Firefox will automatically import all your bookmarks and cookies from IE, so you won’t miss a thing. Trust me: it’s really worth it.
Hey there. I'm Ariel Meadow Stallings, a native Seattleite who's written my way up and down the Left Coast. Electrolicious is where I post daily randomata, but I also write for a living. My first book, Offbeat Bride, was published last year.

i tried switching over to FireFox on my Mac, and i couldn’t get it to a)import anything and b)run very quickly. it was sooooooooo slooooooooow. but that’s probably cuz my computer is whack. i use Firefox on other computers and it’s awesome!

As former Mozilla hacker I’m thrilled that the project has finally put forward something people find actually useful.
Traditionally Mac builds were a bit slower and I don’t have a good solution (except adding more memory, a notorious weak point of XML-based user interface in Firefox).
I’d recommend giving Camino a whirl: it uses the same internals like Firefox, except it looks a bit different:

Camino was quite popular before the rise of Firefox and before Safari 1.0 came out.
Of course, Safari is a solid choice as well. It’s based on a different rendering engine (KHTML from Konqueror), which is open-source as well. The core Safari team has some former Mozilla and Netscape developers and Safari has been significantly influenced by Mozilla - down to the code level. You might not have all your favorite Firefox extensions available for either Camino or Safari, but they both have equally good karma

I like the idea of a Ffectometer, and I’ve been having some trouble with mine as well. I don’t know if it’s the early stages of dementia or what, but all of a sudden I’m losing my grip on some grammatical issues that I thought I had a handle on all these years. Besides the Ffectometer, I’ve recently started having problems with my Who’samatron.
And don’t get me started on my Thatwhichator. There was NEVER any hope.
