Daily affirmations of a word mercenary
Lord, will I ever write about anything other than moving every again? This is just a heads-up post to say that after several days of tinkering with our DSL, I finally called Qwest and they informed me that oh: even though they’d told me they could transfer our service no problem, DSL isn’t available in our area.
Buh?
Jesus, people. It’s just Rainier Beach! It’s not like we moved to Index or something.
The short term result is that we won’t have interweb at home for a while. The long term prognosis is that we have to eat shit and go back to the EVIL EVIL comcast, who I loathe. In the process of buying the house, we just learned that Comcast sent $100 to collections from the last time we had cable internet service. $100 for a cable modem that we returned and they lost. Oh that steams me.
Anyway, this is to say that I may be harder to get ahold of via email these days, since my only access will be at work. And I’m pretty busy at work. Those of you who have the numbers should use the strange device known as a phone to reach me. Horrors! Telephones! It really is like we moved to Index!
Hey there. I'm Ariel Meadow Stallings, a native Seattleite who's written my way up and down the Left Coast. Electrolicious is where I post daily randomata, but I also write for a living. My first book, Offbeat Bride, is in bookstores now.

Actually, they’ve got really good Internet access out in Index. I stayed out at a cabin on the Skykomish a few weeks ago and watched it snow from the comfort of the hot tub…. but inside I had high-speed Internet access via a Linksys router and a cool-looking parabolic antenna mounted out back on the shed.
These guys know about it: http://www.mtindex.com/
Myself, I told Qwest to go stick it and only use Comcast and Skype. Yeah ! Stick it, Qwest !

I also dislike comcast because they gouge their internet-only subscribers with higher rates than their tv+internet subscribers. We don’t have comcast cable because we don’t have a tv … and therefore we would pay higher rates. read more about that.

They don’t offer service in our area either. That was the first thing we checked, since Dre’s working there.

My friends the Saccos (who left a comment in your new house photo album on Flickr, welcoming you to the neighborhood) have told me that Speakeasy told them they *could* get DSL, if they were willing to spend something absurd like $100 a month to get it extended to their house. I don’t know the exact details but supposedly it was possible, just too expensive for them alone, and they didn’t expect any of their immediate neighbors would be interested, which would have brought down the price.
They haven’t signed up to Comcast either, for the same reason you mention - they’re not interested in the cable TV service and Comcast overcharges for internet-only.

Seems like this “pay us a fortune” and we’ll maybe just perhaps consider providing you a service is par for the course - sucks doesn’t it

Comcast pulled that same shit with me. After a day of digging through boxes (we’d moved out of state) I found the receipt I needed as proof that I really did return the modem.
It took them three more months to get it figured out. Comcast sucks like an Electrolux. So does Bank of America.
I’m done. That felt good.
