Why is it so easy to assume that happy = stupid? Couldn’t it be just as likely that happy = has made peace with the fucked-uppedness of it all and refuses to give into futile frustration? I seem to be the only one that thinks this way.
Hey there. I'm Ariel Meadow Stallings, a native Seattleite who's written my way up and down the Left Coast. Electrolicious is where I post daily randomata, but I also write for a living. My first book, Offbeat Bride, was published last year.

It’s more like happy = ignorant. Doesn’t have much to do with smart or not. You’d have to be an incredibley strong person to make peace with all the fucked-upedness in the world.

I completely agree with you. Happy = uh, happy in my book. In my experience happy comes from not living from a place filled with fear and taking the view that the universe is here to help you, not screw you. If you think the world sucks, is angst filled, and that happiness is an illusion then that’s what you’re gonna get. I credit this world view for my magical ability to find excellent parking spaces and have beautiful people just drop into the middle of my life.

I have this arguement with my “Fuck With The Man Or You’re Part Of The Problem” little brother all the time. I think that happy place comes from a satisfying personal life. And having enough to eat.

I’m a FIRM BELIEVER that happiness creates more happiness and vice versa. Call me “dumb” if you want, but I’ve managed to get through many challenges in life by making lemonade out of the lemon and then choosing to be happy about it rather than whine and pine about how bad it was. “You create your own reality” is totally true when you think about whether you want to look at life through your “happy glasses” or your “life-is-shit-glasses.” I am in my mid-50’s and still finding out that that happiness works; whining and complaining doesn’t! there is always something to be grateful for in nearly everything that happens– in MY life anyway! And since I have abandoned the victim mentality, life just keeps getting better and I keep feeling happier with it all. Most of our suffering comes from self-induced thought patterns so I think its dumb to make yourself miserable! So give it up and choose to be a happy fool!!!

Another question: Are stupid people happier? Probably not, but they may be less sensitive, and their sorrow may be less intricate.
A book I am reading asks is there more pleasure than pain in the world, and recommends the reader observe the pleasure of one animal eating versus the the other animal’s pain as it is eaten.
Ha ha ha.
