Andreas is going to be a starting a full-time permanent job as a Project Manager (!) at Speakeasy next week. For those who haven’t been keeping track, this means that while last year Dre and I were both free agents (each of us vacillating between unemployed, contracting, and freelancing), we’re now on the verge of becoming DiNK: Double Income, No Kids. It’s a weird place to be on the edge of, and we’re both sort of freaked out by it. But it’s worth it: we’ll spend a while saving up, paying off debts, getting ducks in a row, paying for the financial sins of our early 20s (Ariel trivia: I am still paying off debt I incurred while living in San Francisco in 1996). Then, once we’re ahead of the game a bit, we’ll assess our next radical plan. Current pipe dreams include property in France or opening a rural artists/musician/writer’s retreat. Or maybe both.
Hey there. I'm Ariel Meadow Stallings, a native Seattleite who's written my way up and down the Left Coast. Electrolicious is where I post daily randomata, but I also write for a living. My first book, Offbeat Bride, was published last year.

Rock on! We’re die-hard Speakeasy users in Baltimore, so kudos to them for hiring your hubby. And kudos to getting ahead - life is a little easier when you’re not having a heart attack while waiting for the next paycheck. Property in France can’t be a bad thing at all.

Part of the appeal of being in France is exposing a child to living abroad. Andreas spent several years of his childhood living in Europe, and we both would like our future child to have the same opportunity.

Props to Andreas! I went backwards this year… From cube whore to freelance work… I think that the change is good in either direction, you truly get to see the advantages and disadvantages of both lifestyles.

for what its worth, i think raising a child overseas would be a fantastic experience that one day I hop to partake in. having the kid, in and of itself, is a fantastic experience as well. far more than i certainly expected.
