I am starting to become quite the marathon dancer. I don’t go out dancing often (maybe once a month, if I’m lucky) and when I do it’s usually to marathon dance, which I think of as follows:
1. Dancing to dance, not to socialize or show-off
2. Dancing continuously (seriously nonstop) for 2 or more hours
I used to be able to go for 8, but that was 10 years ago
3. Dancing sober
As a marathon dancer, there are a few things one must take into consideration:
1. REST
You must be well-rested. If you’re dancing at night (which, sadly, you probably are — only in my dreams and San Francisco are there day parties every weekend), you must get a solid nap before going out. And when I say solid, I mean preferably 2-4 hours. You should feel like you’re sort of starting a new day.
2. HYDRATE
A jogger wouldn’t run for two hours without solid hydration, and you shouldn’t either! Chances are good that you’re dancing in a bar, but when you’re sweating that hard you need water or juice, not alcohol.
3. FOOD
Here’s a little tip for those who don’t often stay up all night without chemical assistance: YOU GET HUNGRY. Really hungry. Eat lightly before going out, but be prepared to have a full, healthy meal once you’re done. You’ll need it.
4. DRESS FOR SUCCESS
You’re probably at a nightclub, but when marathon dancing, you must dress for comfort. I have these platform boots that I absolutely love … but they make my feet sore after an hour of dancing, so I always opt for flat shoes instead.
I may soon be doing much more marathon dancing, now that Seattle is finally a smoke-free city. Woohoo! It’s much easier to dance for several hours when you can actually breath. Any other tips from my fellow marathoners? I know there are some of you out there …

I would only add a few things I do for safety and health…
5. Stretching. I still dance for at least 3-4 hours whenever I can get the chance (cause I love to dance). I find stretching before hand helps me a lot. I`m more relaxed and there is less chance of things like pulled muscles or Charlie horses afterwards. Which is a BIG plus.
6. Do a little work-out. After I do my stretching, I do a little 20 minute drill exercise on a punching bag (but you guys can do whatever you please) and then I take a shower and then I get dressed and go. I do this, so that when I get on the dance floor I`ve already got my second wind and my body is accustomed to the exercise (cause dancing is a good exercise!) I find it`s always easier to go for longer times when I do this, cause my body is already going 100%, so when I push my endurance, I`m not hurting myself. Sometimes people just go from 0 to 100 and they can really hurt themselves, cause the blood isn`t circulating, the muscles aren`t relaxed, etc, etc. So you get faster burn outs and harder burn outs afterwards.
Bonus: I drink a lot of milk just on principal. I find it really helps to build a tolerance to acidosis and is great for anaerobic conditioning. If you don`t drink milk cause of your beliefs or lifestyle, eat bananas. They really help build up those tolerances which means less muscle pain, less Charlie horses and more dancing!

…BEST ADVICE EVER! Thanks, Cthulu! Not mentioning stretching was a HUGE over-sight of mine, especially after I just wrote my Ode To Stretching a few days ago. Thanks for reminding me.

Wow! I love this post! Thanks for the awesome info. I’m jealous of Washingtonians too for your newfound smoke-free environs. Hopefully Oregon will move in the same direction as WA, CA and NYC in banning smoking, but my hopes are dim.

i wish i could nap for 2-4 hours and still feel ok. if i do that, when i get up, i feel even more tired than when i laid down to begin with.

rest…hydrate…food…clothe….
that is exactly the order i prepare in when heading out for a night of marathon Dancing. *particularly* the Disco Nap, but a warning that this can turns into a “wake up at 4:00 a.m. and groan” nap if you’re not disciplined enough to get up after a few hours.
i would add that after hydrating and either before or during fooding, i generally caffeinate (Rock Star!) as well, as it’s hard to keep up with the dosed masses if you’re going sober without a little help from the caffeine gods.
