Daily affirmations of a word mercenary
I finally have my new computer, and it sounds like … nothing! After three years of listening to my old computer whine like a jet engine, it’s heavenly relief to have a computer that barely whispers even as it crunches away.
Thanks, as always, go to Professor TC who has yet to fail me when it comes to hardware geekery. This particular project was a little taxing on both of us (failed motherboards! bad memory! scratched disks!), but the pay off is sweet and delicious. There were times when my old computer was so loud that it would start needling its way into my brain and I would have to flee my home office to get away from the whining of the hard drives. Now, I’ll have no distractions (other than a million other things) while finishing my book.
PS: The only error I made with my data was that I failed to export my itunes library file. This means that I’ve lost 2+ years of song ratings and playlists … unless I can figure out how to import the information from my ipod. Any ideas?

My boyfriend says there’s a program called IPod Rip by the Little Software Company (?). Apple doesn’t approve of this software but oh well! You should try to get it for free from someone you know or maybe someone in the interweb, or try to find it on a torrent download site? Good luck.

Ariel, Check out Ask Metafilter’s ipod tag. I’ve seen questions over there very similar to yours and there have been plenty of recommendations for software that will get it done. Good luck!

I’m not sure about on a PC, but on a Mac, all you need to do is plug in the iPod, wait for iTunes to prompt for your id and password, enter it, and it should import all of your tunes back from your iPod. Good luck!

I had the same problem. You just need to downoad some free software. I used Senuti:

DO NOT just plug in your ipod. Your computer, unless otherwise instructed, will automatically sync from the computer to the ipod, thus erasing the playlists from the ipos as well. You will get detailed instructions on how to combat this with the Senuti software.

I forgot what program I used, but there is a shareware program that will do this for you. Of course Apple doesn’t dig/condone it bc of copywrite stuff. Go to ilongue and they will tell you what you need.

Congrats on the new compy. Although I am a *tiny* bit insulted that you didn’t ask me to help build you one. How can I make it more obvious that I’m a gaming geek with 3 scratch built boxes at home? I live for that shit.
