Daily affirmations of a word mercenary
Five years ago I heard a beautiful piece of music on Radio Nova. This was before they were doing song titles on their live stream, and since the radio station is based in Paris, I couldn’t exactly call and ask them what they’d just played. The song was an instrumental soundtrack piece, with this haunting melody that almost sounded like whales singing. It sounded lightly familiar, but I couldn’t place it.
The song has continued to haunt me. Every now and then the melody would pop into my head, and I’d curse my inability to know what the hell it was and cue it up for an obsessive listen.
This morning, while listening to some new MP3s I yanked from a friend, I heard the song again. HALLELUJAH! It’s “Of These, Hope - Reprise” from Peter Gabriel’s Passion, the soundtrack for The Last Temptation of Christ. Sweet satisfaction at last.

I’ve always wondered why that soundtrack isn’t Peter Gabriel’s most famous accomplishment. Many people aren’t even aware it exists, but it’s so gorgeous and evocative. Glad you found your mystery song!

Ah yes, I have that CD. There is also a corresponding CD called “Passion Sources” - which has the original songs that Peter Gabriel sampled or re-mixed or what not. You might enjoy that as well.
