you are doing the right thing by not leaving valuables in your car. just leave it unlocked, this will save you further costs associated with breakage due to theives' use of their tool of choice - a 'slim jim'. this device is less than 5 seconds to open any car , but in the hands of an amateur can cause damage to the internal bits of your car door. easier just to leave it open if you think its likely to happen a lot.
Way to go! Yes, if you end up parking in that area again I agree you should leave them a nice note. Can you imagine how you would have felt if you HADN'T taken those items with you this time?

You should buy an old CD case (or something else hollow and valueable) and fill it with dog poop, so when they open it up, they'll get poop on their hands or floor!

yay for you. i'm glad you foiled the foilers! i hate those petty thieves. i had my house broken into last year (300+ CDs stolen; luckily that was all) and it was unnerving to say the least. BUT... i did have a satisfying car prowl on queen anne a few years back. one summer, they got my stereo (i always forgot to take the face inside), but left their screwdriver. but a few weeks later the car was "broken into" (i'd left the window cracked, duh) but there was no stereo for them to take. all they got were the pennies in my change well. ha!
