Daily affirmations of a word mercenary
So, we’ve got a new place! Well, subject to inspection at least. Are you excited?! I AM! If you care about real estate stuff, feel free to read on to hear all about it.
Location, location, location, people! We’ll be back in our neighborhood where we can walk to everything and don’t have to drive hardly EVER!! Dre can bike to work, I can carpool, we can walk to 4 grocery stores again, and YAY! It’s even a mere two blocks from my favorite tea shop and NIA dance studio. I’ve lived in the neighborhood off ‘n’ on for 10 years, and I’m so excited to get back into it.
Our condo is in a building that’s actually three connected buildings: an old mansion circa 1900 with two wings built on in the 1930s. Our unit is essentially the top floor of the old mansion. The complex has been rented as apartments for 70 years, and is now being converted to condos. At this point our unit is still just a crusty old apartment, but by the time we move in (supposedly 9/1 but probably more like 10/1) it’ll be remodeled and all updated with new EVERYTHING. This appeals to the yuppie in me: old building, but with new appliances and paint and flooring.
ABOUT IT:
And? All within our price range! Unlike our dream condo that went for $50k more than we could afford.
The big sacrifice we’re making is a room. It’s only 1br, but it’s huuuuuge, so I think we’ll be fine if we use the space efficiently. There was going to have to be a sacrifice somewhere (square footage? location? price? style?) and this condo is pretty much perfect with everything except being 1br instead of 2br … but it’s plenty of actual space.

Congratulations! Your place definitely sounds like it has some soul to it, unlike many of the condo conversions I’ve seen.

Yeah Insomnia, we looked at a lot of characterless condos … old ugly bland, new townhome bland, new lofty bland, new dormroom-feeling bland. This conversion is just right because it’s old, but spanky clean.
The only downside? Vinyl siding. Oh well.

congrats, ms. a. that is SUPERFUCKINGCOOL! don’t worry about the siding. you don’t have to live OUTSIDE the house, so who cares? (yeah, i have mint green siding and this is what i tell myself every time i pull in the driveway, har.)

Yay Congratulations! The elitist in me loves having a particular feature that the other units don’t have; our place is the same way. Here’s a link to one of my favorite blogs, they deal with everything from decorating to living green to making the most of your square footage: http://sanfrancisco.apartmenttherapy.com/

Lisa Marie, I loooove that website! When Andreas was fretting about our condo only being 1br, I brought up that site (and their annual contest) as a way to reassure him that people make amazing homes out of way smaller spaces than ours! I mean…920 sq. feet? HUGE!

I want to know the back story - why the move?
Very exciting. Dawn and I wanted to move back to Capitol Hill when we were ready to move out of Columbia City, but we couldn’t (were scared) to make the transition to condo (all we could afford) so we fled for the suburbs (BI). Big mistake
Good move.

Hi there; I’m the one who moved here from Cincinnati back in January. We live just to the south of Rainier Beach — having a big dog made it hard to find a place closer to town to rent, and we had to move fast. I totally understand what you’re saying; I have daily bouts of irritation/depression because I can’t walk to any place but other houses from where we are, and there’s not a good sense of community here (we are REALLY in suburbia; at least Rainier Beach has an identity). I can’t wait until our lease is up and we can buy somewhere closer to town (probably a trailer since that’s all we’ll be able to afford).
