YES!

Lord what a double bind. I too get the most comments and traffic (all at a mediocre level, of course) when I write something cynical, incredibly self-revealing and what commenters call "honest." It causes me to feel, not like I'm keeping secrets, but as if I'm being in authentic in some way for only showing certain parts of me. But do we not do that in f2f life anyhow?

sigh...still figuring it out...

BTW -
Nice to see another 52-something-er :)

Yeah, I should clarify that I don't get hate mail/trollish comments much more frequently than that ... just that over 7 years, that adds up to a shit-ton of hate in my inbox.

I find the hate mail experience interesting because I get a fair amount of traffic but I don't get much hate mail. I write a weight-loss blog too, so you'd think I'd be a big, fat target. I might get one nasty comment every two or three months, tops, but that's it. I just remember it more clearly than the nice mail. I've also finally gotten to a point where I ignore it whereas earlier in my blogging career I'd feel the need to respond, which only feeds the fire.
