Although a little expensive, I find myself at the Free People website often--about three times a year you can get a really good deal. Everything is a little hippie-esque, but all the clothes are simple with beautiful details.

Ariel, thank you for your generous fashion advice and suggestions. All to often, some fashionistas refuse to divulge the sources of their clothing or their methods because of fear of assimilation. Your openness is refreshing. :)

kim -
i hear you re: thift store pricing screwing you over for 'real' shopping.... hell, old thrift store prices make me balk at new thrift store prices! it makes me feel all geriatric to announce 'what happened to the days that you could get t-shirts for 50c at value village? or go down and buy clothes by weight at the 'buy the pound' goodwill'

treasure troves still exist in some places, but they're getting harder and harder to find, so i find myself withering away in denial in new clothing stores, recoiling at 70$ for a pair of pants and leaving with nothing until the straits get really dire. :)

i shop heavily at thrift stores, primarily due to a lack of money yet simultaneously being a clotheshorse ;) most of my clothes that get the most compliments are things i got for $10 or less at a garage sale, value village, goodwill, etc.

the downside to this is that prices that are considered normal seem outrageous to me and my closet is overflowing with weird things that are awesome yet can't be worn to work or to many other locations unless i want people to stare at me.

i think i actually need to go more in the other direction and have more basic, comfortable stuff that's more versatile

Oh and Kate, those dresses are from 3 Free NYC, who are linked in the post. I love them, but it's almost impossible to find their clothes online — although you can email them and ask which shops are carrying their stuff: http://www.3freenyc.com/where-to-buy/
