Dre and I were in Iowa for Thanksgiving visiting his mom this weekend, and at one point hula hooping came up. For the first time ever, I described myself as a “retired hooper.” My hoops have been roped to the top of our car for three months, and I haven’t missed them a bit. Not even once.

There was some disappointment at the announcement, but I countered that for godsake, I only have so much time for so many side projects and hobbies — as I add news ones of course I have to cycle through the old ones.

Regardless, it made me think of obsessions/hobbies gone by.

  • Musical theater: 1989-1993
  • Phish: 1994-1996
  • Raves: 1996-2000
  • Hoops: 2002-2006
  • Salon of Shame: 2005-Pres

Then there are brand obsessions (Lush, Mr. Bento, BPAL, Campers, Lululemon, etc x 500) but they’re not as interesting as hobbies and tend to cycle faster.

Then there are TV-on-DVD obsessions. Currently, Dre and I are completely sucked into Battlestar Galactica, but in the past it’s been Six Feet Under, Weeds, Carnivale, Freaks ‘n’ Geeks, etc.

Then there are the retired collections like Little Mermaid stuff (ug: that was a looooong time ago), dragonflies (please! no more dragonflies!), novelty socks, teapots, etc.

I’m not sure if these rotating tastes make me fickle, or just someone with a lot of interests and limited hours in the day.
