Dre and I were in Iowa for Thanksgiving visiting his mom this weekend, and at one point hula hooping came up. For the first time ever, I described myself as a “retired hooper.” My hoops have been roped to the top of our car for three months, and I haven’t missed them a bit. Not even once.
There was some disappointment at the announcement, but I countered that for godsake, I only have so much time for so many side projects and hobbies — as I add news ones of course I have to cycle through the old ones.
Regardless, it made me think of obsessions/hobbies gone by.
Then there are brand obsessions (Lush, Mr. Bento, BPAL, Campers, Lululemon, etc x 500) but they’re not as interesting as hobbies and tend to cycle faster.
Then there are TV-on-DVD obsessions. Currently, Dre and I are completely sucked into Battlestar Galactica, but in the past it’s been Six Feet Under, Weeds, Carnivale, Freaks ‘n’ Geeks, etc.
Then there are the retired collections like Little Mermaid stuff (ug: that was a looooong time ago), dragonflies (please! no more dragonflies!), novelty socks, teapots, etc.
I’m not sure if these rotating tastes make me fickle, or just someone with a lot of interests and limited hours in the day.

I have the same obsession/hobby ‘issues’ (for lack of a better word) as you. I have so many tastes and not enough time in the day/week/year. And I change up so often.
Although, unlike you, I couldn’t put dates to mine if my life depended on it. I’m impressed.
Battlestar Galactica… are we talking the early ’80s or the new one that’s out? I loved the old one. I remember watching it with my parents.

Michele, we’re hooked on the new BSG, which is more like a contemporary drama than sci-fi.

When you are Old As A Grandmother, like Bossy, you will really accrue the discarded hobbies. It’s stunning.

i’m the same way. my tastes evolve…but i wouldn’t call myself fickle. there’s always an easy to follow transition from one to another (though if you look at my time-line…i might appear to be schizophrenic
i think the raver in my stayed the longest though…since that was the first “scene” that i entered alone. completely of my own free will (sans some silly bf to tell me it was “cool”). maybe that’s why i’m still a fan of glitter and hello kitty? hehe
oh, and YUM to lush!

Ha ha, being a phish head in high school was sooo cool. I thought that phase would never end. Yeah. Right. Do I still wear patchy spinny skirts. Um. No.
Other obsessions included: bikram yoga, macrobiotic cooking, hip-hop ghetto-booty shaking at clubs, and a brief stint on “the compact”, which resulted in some regretful and mindless uber-consumption.

Am I the only one who’s a bit disappointed that you’ve declared yourself a retired hooper? I can’t help but associate you with the whole hooping movement. So, what’s next (besides more books and blogs)? I’m ready for you to start a new movement I suppose. So, go ahead dazzle us!

I’m already on it, Wonton.
