ALSO: i must agree with your anxiety - it’s dangerous having all our eggs in one basket, as it were. one wily asteroid, superflu or torrential solar flare, and poof! there goes the human race. everything we ever did would end with the current generation - all the van goghs, jokes, kitties, gone - our last echoes fading forever across the universe in the form of leaking broadcast radio and TV signals (at least until the point where we go digital with both). the rest is silence.

so! becoming a spacefaring race is our destiny; anything else is an evolutionary dead end. well, assuming we all don’t transform into beings of light in 2012, that is…
