There hasn't been enough time for everyone else to catch up yet. I'm surprised you didn't look at any Windows Mobile phones. The Smartphone version of Windows Mobile is actually okay, and if you're at MS I think you can get discounts on them even greater than what the mobile providers offer, as well as access to beta software and OS releases. It didn't help the ugly menu situation, but at least I no longer cringe every time I look at my phone's screen.
