That’s all very well, but maybe MS could focus on why yesterday’s “security update” killed my laptop’s sound? And why nothing on microsoft or windows support said anything about this problem, even though googling revealed I was not the only person affected…
Sorry to rant, Ariel, it was a cool article. I just want to note that not all of us hate MS for purely superficial reasons.
Anyway, if anyone is having the same problem, I found the solution here (http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/windows-xp/32503-no-audio-device-problems.html) at number 3.

how exciting - it’s cool to see how close to the surface your MS gig has gotten, especially at such a big company. and despite the trials and tribulations of Windows and their bitter users (quit yer bitching and get an Apple already, people), it is sad that the perception of Microsoft’s employees has become one of out-of-touch squares - in many ways, that’s only consistently true when it comes to the management, the executives, perhaps some of the older engineers. the rest of the crew is comprised of some of the best and brightest that money can buy - talented, creative people who are anything but square. comparing their products to those of Apple or Google can be painful, certainly - but we’re talking about three different companies with rather different goals.

Yeah, Amy — it’s not my job to try to change anyone’s mind about Microsoft products. You can hate Windows all you want — I work for staffing marketing doing employer branding. So I market MSFT as a place to work, not MSFT software or other products. It’s an interesting distinction in how and why I do what I do.
