The mail came early today, and it did not contain anything from CPC. All that came was a lame-ass URB magazine. I guess it’s a free subscription, so I shouldn’t complain.

I did it: I finally mailed in my CPC application! Granted, it’ll still be in two weeks before the deadline, but considering that I’ve been working on that fracking application for over two months, I think I could have gotten it in a little sooner. I also have a phone interview on Monday. oOOooooOoOoh!
I have [...]

How hard is it to get into the Columbia Publishing Course?
Admissions are competitive. Each year, the Publishing Course receives between 350 and 400 applications for 100 places. Don’t let this discourage you, however. The admission committee looks very carefully at each application and weighs its individual merits.
Ok, that’s not that bad. One in four. Not [...]

Hephestus, Andreas and my rescued laboratory rat, did something he’s never done before. Last night, he chewed through the cord to my computer speakers. Of course he picked the ONE cord that isn’t replaceable: the one that feeds from the computer to the right speaker and doesn’t have a plug on the speaker end. Thanks, [...]

This is kind of strange: I asked SDG (the publisher of Lotus) if he would write a letter of recommendation for my application to the Columbia Publishing Course. He said yes, sort of. He asked me to write it for him, and then he’d approve and sign. Now I’m stuck with the weird task of [...]

What a dazzling morning! I made myself some rolls and tea and sat outside in the treezeebo (a gazebo-esque structure outside our backdoor that is built into four trees), and listened to the birds sing and enjoyed the sunlight crisscrossing through the forest. I saw a Pileated woodpecker work its way down and then back [...]

I’m think I’m going to go see Cheb i Sabbah tonight. I’m still waffling a bit about it…he’s playing at the Baltic Room, which is ridiculously tiny. As Steve said:
stephen_hecht: I can’t imagine how crowded it’s going to be. Oh, wait, yes I can. I’ve been there.
arielmeadow: Yeah, I know.
stephen_hecht: The problem with [...]

I’m suddenly aware of the irony of my attending CPC to get away from corporate work. Publishing can be very corporate. But it can also be wacky…aim for wacky, aim for wacky. Where are the all the other people like me? Driven, skilled, motivated, and funky. Why does the funk drain out when people get [...]

Last night I slept in Owen’s basement. I slept very very well, since my little futon was right next to the boiler. The basement may have been a little “Silence of the Lambs”-creepy, but it was warm and dark and I slept like a princess.
I hate the corporate world. I’m definitely applying for CPC this [...]

I have fallen in love with Nerve Magazine. Finally, some intelligent sex banter! Me thinks I must write something for them.
Reading the bios of the magazine’s staff was inspiring, daunting, impressive, and motivating. Of course the magazine is published in New York, like 85% of the nation’s rags, and of course most of the staff [...]
