I lived in the house my parents built until I was 18 years old. Since then, on average I’ve moved at least once a year. Below, you can read all about my housing shuffles, apartments, househunting, and cozy homemaking. The summary since I started this blog in late 2000: Olympia, New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, Seattle. Spring of 2005, Andreas and I bought our first house in Seattle’s Rainier Beach neighborhood.

Decent

27 Aug 2008 In: Eavesdropper, Homely

Our condo faces onto a courtyard, and when the windows are open there’s definitely a little Melrose Place action that happens. We hear neighbors coming and going, having sex, spanking each other, etc. It’s always entertaining.

We can also hear the callbox at the front gate. Monday night, this is what Dre and I heard, as we sat on the couch staring each other silently with wide eyes that said, “Don’t start laughing! They’ll hear you!”

RING RING
Male resident’s voice over callbox: Hello?
Male guest at gate [coyly]: Are you decent?
Resident: …Uh, who is this?
Guest: Oh no, I totally dialed the wrong unit!
Resident: Uh, ok.

RING RING
Different male resident’s voice over callbox: …There you are!
Guest [uses exact same line!]: Are you decent?
[sound of gate being unlocked]

So, in my Breaking Dawn review, I failed to mention this hilarious moment:

“I was more focused on the absolutely huge white bed in the center of the room, hung with billowy clouds of mosquito netting.”

This is Bella describing the conjugal bed waiting for her and Edward on their honeymoon. Clearly, Stephanie Meyer is tapping into every tween girl’s fantasies about the most perfectest virginity-losing bed evar!!!1! and so we get white bedding, mosquito netting, etc.

And now I present to you our bedroom, as decorated by Andreas:

I’ve always said Dre’s bedroom tastes were sort of that of a 9-year-old girl … but now Stephanie Meyer has proven it!

My outlaw mother has just about finished the shelves she built in our living room. I am in organizational heaven right now, just gazing at them and dreaming how all our books and plants and tchochkes will sit.

We are so blessed!

Unplugged Night #20

11 Jun 2008 In: Homely

My outlaw mother (Dre’s mom Nancy) is in town this week, building an amazing floor-to-ceiling bookshelf in our living room. Dre and I both had class last night (he: circus, me: dance) and I got home before he did to find Nancy still plugging away on the shelves. I was ravenous and made Nancy and myself a simple little meal of eggs scrambled with fresh green beans, and some salad topped with apples and cranberries.

Dre got home a half hour later, and found me in the kitchen cleaning up.

“Whatcha doin’?” he asked.

“I made dinner,” I explained.

He looked hungry. “Ooh, whatcha make?”

“Nothing you can eat — so suck it,” was my kindly response.

…Sometimes vegan vs. vegetarian makes for a cruel, cruel kitchen.

My dog this week

Sassafras celebrated her Gotcha Day this week by getting abscessed anal glands again — first one on Wednesday, then one today. It’s not been a good week for my dog’s ass.

It was one year ago today that I drove with Dawn over the Cascade mountains to go meet Sassafras. We looked like a pink-haired lesbian couple, and my first encounter with Sassafras was watching her hop out of her foster-family’s pick up, and immediately skulk away with her tail tucked.

Dawn, who’s worked with service dogs and knows dog behavior better than I do, immediately identified her as a submissive and therefore good dog — her first impression has proven to be absolutely right. I asked the foster family a couple cursory questions (Q: “What’s her big flaw?” A: “She’s needy and just wants to be on your lap 24/7″) but I was pretty much immediately smitten.
