People, I am tired. This weekend Dre and I drove to Missoula for his step-mother’s memorial. 16 hours of driving round trip with 36 hours of intense life and death and babies and memorials and hot solstice sun and all the stuff that comes along with family but, like, times 10 and with some PMS [...]

Farewell, Sallie

6 Jun 2008 In: Journalish

Yesterday evening Andreas’ step-mother Sallie passed away. She was at home being held by her son Christian when she died. In her final month of life, she got to meet her first grandchild and bless her son’s wedding, and by all accounts she made her exit with conscious grace. Safe journey, Sallie.

33rd Birthday: Awesome! I got bangs and went to Olympus Spa and had lots of walks with the dog and a great dinner with dear friends. Thanks for all the well-wishings, everyone!
Montana weekend: Intense! There was a fresh baby and a wedding and lots of tears. Dre’s stepmother made it to the wedding, which was [...]

33 Gratitudes

Today is my 33rd birthday and I have the day off. It’s going to be 90 degrees out and I have Special Plans with myself for the day, which include a long breezy walk with my dog in the afternoon, and then dinner with a few friends. It is a very happy day.

Andreas got calls today from Montana: his step-mother’s battle with cancer has taken a turn for the worse, and doctors are giving her a prognosis of a couple weeks. He flew out to Missoula on a one-way ticket tonight.
In a twist of painful divine poetry, Dre’s sister’s baby is due in a week.

Tantalizing “fake spring” sunny morning. Spontaneous brunch with one girlfriend, then a walk with another. We stop by the tea shop where maybe another friend was going to be, and find her with two other friends, and a third who’s just randomly walked in the door.
The six of us follow the tide of people wandering [...]

Portland

This weekend I headed three hours south to Portland, which is sort of the cultural hotspot Seattle was 15 years ago. Portland circa now is filled with fabulous arts and music and great urban planning and public transportation and hot bus boys and great tea shops and relatively affordable housing and it’s always a delight [...]

January 2, 1998 Wow!
1998 has been an amazing year so far! New Year’s had to be the best new years I’ve ever had! I’m serious! The party was perfect … the decorations were the most beautiful I’ve ever seen … trees and moss and leaves and curtains everywhere … the music was great and eclectic [...]

Why lie

When I’m out dancing, I usually wear a hat and keep the brim low. I avoid eye contact for the most part.
Last night, I made the mistake of looking up.

Dre and I were in Iowa for Thanksgiving visiting his mom this weekend, and at one point hula hooping came up. For the first time ever, I described myself as a “retired hooper.” My hoops have been roped to the top of our car for three months, and I haven’t missed them a bit. Not [...]
