Logistica Category

Nitty gritty makes the world go round. Did this work? Can you see this? Is this thing on? This category is probably a real snore, but hey: sometimes the details must be addressed.

RSS updates

1 Jul 2004 In: Logistica

Hey everyone who reads this page via an RSS feed like Bloglines or LiveJournal: I just updated my RSS template, and the result was that my last 15 entries reposted to RSS and clogged up your reading. Sorry about that — necessary evil.

TypeKey Again

27 Jun 2004 In: Logistica

I’m experimenting again with TypeKey. It’s back on.

Open Comments

8 Jun 2004 In: Logistica

I’m going to experiment with opening comments back up — unregistered users can comment using their name and email, just like old days. I’m going to see how this affects things in terms of commenting levels, comment spam, etc.

Those of you who are TypeKey registered, please continue logging into TypeKey before commenting.

TypeKey Feedback

2 Jun 2004 In: Logistica

So, the recent construction on Electrolicious seems to be just about complete. The new archives are working (love it!), and the TypeKey registered comments are finally fully integrated. I had to sacrifice my beloved SimpleComments plugin to make TypeKey work, but that’s ok. Special thanks to Jennifer Dodd and Six Apart support for their help.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I’ve noticed comment counts dropping since TypeKey was introduced. I’m assuming this is because people don’t want to deal with registering for TypeKey, but I’d love to get a little feedback from y’all directly on the subject. What is it about TypeKey that makes you not want to comment? Once you’re registered, it’s actually EASIER to comment (no need type in your info).

Some folks have expressed concern about providing their email address to TypeKey, and here are a couple things to understand:
1. TypeKey encodes your email address whenever it displays in the comments, so spambots cannot harvest your email address off my page.
2. If you don’t want your email to show at all, simply fill in the URL field…the default setting shows the URL instead of your email. The email is only there so that I can easily respond to your comments via email.
3. TypeKey was developed in part to combat comment spam, and Six Apart has alwyas respected users’ privacy. You don’t have to worry about them spamming you.
4. Go ahead and use a spam-catching email address. That’s what Yahoo is for.

Anyway, I’d love to hear feedback from folks about what makes them comment or not comment now that I’ve switched to TypeKey. Maybe it doesn’t have anything to do with TypeKey and it’s just that my posts haven’t been comment-worth lately. Or, maybe you’ve encountered technical difficulties? Let me know. If you don’t want to comment, you can email me.

Construction

21 May 2004 In: Logistica

Things are going to be a little messy around here — I’m working with Jennifer to do some back-end coding changes on Electrolicious, so you may notice some things being weird off ‘n’ on this weekend.

Changes in store:
1. Adding individiual archives
When you link a post, the link will be JUST THAT POST, instead of that post within a monthly archive.

2. Inline comments
Instead of a pop-up window with comments, comments will be inline after the post, like how things are over here.

3. Finally getting TypeKey figured out
Just you wait!

Grumble

After upgrading to MT3.0, I’ve found that mt-blacklist doesn’t work. MT3 does make it easier to delete comment spam when it floods in (15+ this morning), but until I get TypeKey set up, MT3 doesn’t seem to do much to STOP the comment spam…and with mt-blacklist broken, I feel a little vulnerable.

So, be watching for new commenting protocols. I love my comments and commenters, so I don’t want to make it harder for y’all to leave feedback to posts….but comment spam makes it sorta necessary.

Update
TypeKey comment-authentication enabled! I’ll test this out a few different ways, but for now I have my site configured to automatically accept all comments from TypeKey-registered users (it’s easy to sign up! I hope you’ll each take half a second to register today!). Comments from unregistered users won’t appear on the site until they are approved by me. I’m already feeling drunk with the power of control!

Update 2
Things are a little weird with TypeKey. It’s being fiddled with.
