Andreas and I have been together since New Years Eve 1997. We’ve lived together since fall of 1998. We’ve travelled across Europe together. We spend holidays and vacations with each other’s families. We’re listed on each other’s bank accounts. We’ve moved around the country together. And after almost seven years of commitment, we finally made it legal in August 2004. And now I’m writing a book about it.

The Boys

11 Aug 2004 In: Wedding

the boys, originally uploaded by foo manchoo.

Another great shot on Flickr! This one was taken by one hot single guy friend (Damonid) of three of my other hot single guy friends (Paul, Yeshua, and Owen). I love everything about this picture…and everything about the men in it (and behind the camera!).

Kate & Me

Here’s a shot from the wedding of me with my friend Kate. Kate and I have been friends since 1976, when our mothers started trading babysitting duties with each other. It meant so much to me to have her at the ceremony, and she offered up a truly touching toast later in the evening. I like this shot.

Prezzies

11 Aug 2004 In: Wedding

I sit here this morning drinking tea made in our wonderful new Bodum Shin Cha tea press. What a clever design! What wonderful tea! What great prezzies we got!

Andreas is currently drinking his tea in bed, where he’s underneath a gorgeous deep red canopy that we fashioned from a beautiful gold-threaded sari we received from his cousin Kim, and the handmade quilt rack we received from his family friends Bob and Birgit. I realize a quilt rack isn’t really meant to be used as a footboard/canopy piece, but until we get the quilt I’m begging T. to make us, it’s the best way to use the beautiful piece of handcrafted furniture. (Tip: it’s really goood to have artisan woodworkers in the family!)

We had a few instances of overlap. We got exactly three blenders, one of which has already been traded in for some of the coolest kitchen gadgets ever (an avocado slicer! a flip-top garlic press! the bread knife we’ve been needing for years!). We also got two gorgeous wooden salad bowls, one of which will be used for salad, the other as a countertop fruit bowl.

We got one gift (which will remain unnamed) that appears to be the result of a wrinkle in the fabric of time. This gift was clearly destined for Susannah and Michael’s wedding, fall of 2001. It’s the most gorgeous representation of the theme of their celebration, and I can only imagine that a rift in the space time continuum resulted in the gift appearing at our wedding. To correct this anomalie of physics, it’s my honor to pass the wonderful gift on to Susannah and Michael, as a way of thanking them for everything they did to help us with our wedding, and as a little pre-third anniversary gift. I refuse to think there’s anything wrong with doing this, and I can only hope the gift-giver would agree. Etiquette dictates not telling them, so I won’t…but I really wish I could.

One non-wedding present that we’ve been enjoying is a new used car! We’d been driving Dre’s mom’s partner’s purple truck for the last couple years, but Dre’s mom recently decided that she wanted to take it back, because it would make hauling her woodworking materials much easier. So she traded us a fricking ‘96 Subaru Legacy in exchange for the ‘94 Ford Ranger. Dude: we totally got the better deal on that one, but don’t tell her that. We are in love with the new vehicle. I’ve never really liked driving a pickup around the city (too big! uses too much gas! too unneccessary except when camping or moving!), and a sporty station wagon with a nice rack is much more my style. Technically, we’re only trading for a year…Nancy might want the Subaru back. If it comes to that, I will probably have to try to buy it from her. Because I already love it that much.

…And the prezzies just keep on coming! Many of our friends were visibly relieved to hear that technically you have one year from the date of the wedding to buy presents, and the registry has continued to be hit in the days since this weekend. Thanks to every last one of you for all the wonderful gifts. Our home is filled with boxes and bows and cards that make me want to dance little happy jigs all over the place.

I think this is my favorite wedding picture thus far. And, if the photographer’s comment is any indication…I’m not the only one.

Our friends are starting to post their wedding photos on Flickr! Rock. Here’s one that Heidi took near the end of the ceremony. Hoopers, take note of the bamboo hoop altar behind us as we said our vows. Also: look! I’m wearing a ring! Weird!

If you’re on Flickr, you can join our wedding group to see the pictures as they’re posted. Or, you can be patient and wait until I build a gallery. Up to you.

We did it!

Moments before the ceremony, originally uploaded by Electrolicious.

We got married, and everything was exactly incredibly magically perfect. Everything! Sometime around 3am, just after the third DJ had finished his set, my friend Megan jokingly asked me, “Jeez, how are any of us ever going to top this?”

“Have your friends do the whole wedding!” I laughed. And it’s true. Our community of friends and family gave us the most amazing party ever. What a gift. How does one even begin to say thank you? I have no idea.

I’m sure I’ll write more after I’ve gotten my head out of my ass.

Ensuing Madness

6 Aug 2004 In: Wedding

Ooh, things are getting a little crazy! All fine, but predictably crazy. This morning’s crisis was that our pick-up (with the soundsystem locked in the back) got towed away overnight. HA! Luckily it was very easy to get it out of impound (we’ll just factor that $150 into the wedding budget, right?).

Now we’re madly preparing to head to the Island. It’s raining, but whatever. We’re getting married tomorrow no matter what! This rain is going to make the garden so gorgeous.

Potty

My coworker Ricky agreed to make signs for the wedding. I was thinking they’d be pretty simple, but he went way above and beyond and made them super fancy and stylized and visually in-keeping with the other design elements. They’re amazing! I’m thinking this batch of signs in particular will be hot keepsakes.
