Today, my sister-in-law Gillian gave birth to a son — little Oliver!

Andreas is in Missoula to meet his new nephew, and I’ll be there this weekend to say my own hellos.

For now, I get this photo of uncle and nephew meeting for the first time.

Friday night I was on ABC’s World News with Charlie Gibson, talking about 52 Nights Unplugged in the context of a segment about multi-tasking and time management.

TV is a weird beast, and one I’ve learned a lot about in the last year. For the curious, here’s what this particular experience was like.

Andreas got calls today from Montana: his step-mother’s battle with cancer has taken a turn for the worse, and doctors are giving her a prognosis of a couple weeks. He flew out to Missoula on a one-way ticket tonight.

In a twist of painful divine poetry, Dre’s sister’s baby is due in a week.

SO HARD.

Woowoo! Who’s still on the Unplugged Express? It’s been a while since I wrote about an unplugged night because honestly, they’ve started just feeling like a nice, integrated routine.

I still struggle. I’m doing Unplugged Nights on Tuesdays, which is the night of my mind-bending dance class. That means that I stay busy for over 2 hours of the evening, walking to class, dancing, walking home, sometimes stopping to visit with a friend or have dinner with myself over a cup of ramen and a newspaper.

I did skip dance class one Tuesday, opting to just stay home instead. It was a much harder night, and I was sorely tempted by my screen. Dre was off at circus class and I just wanted to lay around and relax. But I got twitchy about half way through the night, desperate for two things I really wanted and didn’t have: internet and sugar. I could have popped open my laptop or walked to the store for a fix, but instead I moaned about on the couch until Andreas came home and brought ice cream.

Andreas Paris 2003

Five years ago, Andreas bought a jacket at a flea market in France. This is him wearing it on the day it was purchased in May of 2003. Andreas loved that jacket. It was hemp, had two asymmetrical zippers, and a fabulous double kangaroo pouch in the front.

The jacket went on many adventures. It traveled across countries! It shuffled around Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco. It went to parties and work, dinners and parks. It went everywhere Andreas went because it was his favorite jacket.

Naturally, the jacket slowly started falling apart. I did what I could to mend it, re-stitching the cotton lining, mending split seams. When its zipper failed, a new zipper was installed. But eventually it started to disintegrate in ways that couldn’t be fixed. The elbows blew out. The lining went so threadbare that whole sections came loose.
