My old friend Megan and I recently started taunting each other with old emails from our respective archives. Here’s one of the less embarrassing snippets from an email I sent her in 1999. Some things never change.

I just can’t quite figure out how to integrate my life. How do I pay the bills and stay inspired? How do I live day to day without falling into a grind that makes me feel like a cog? How can I remember to be present, inspired, and aware at all moments without getting lulled into the stupor that seems necessary for everyday living?

Also, wow: we all wrote REALLY long emails in 1999. Seriously. Like massive letters. While my life questions remain the same, my communication style is waaaay more concise.

Do something.

Last month I met a young woman who was well spoken, very smart, clearly good at her job. As part of our chat, I asked her what she did outside of work — what were her hobbies? Her passions?

She looked at me a little embarrassed and answered, “Um, I don’t really do much. I like to see my friends when I can. And, um, I like movies?”
