When work gets hard

15 Aug 2008 In: Randomata

Dre’s been embroiled in a really rough project at work these last couple weeks, and told me last night about a kvetch session he had with some of his fellow project managers. There was an acknowledgment that the situation had been frustrating, and that it was time for an anything goes bitch sesh. Just let it out! Vent your frustrations!

Andreas recounted that he was the first to pipe up, ranting “I mean, God! I HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO MAKE IT TO A YOGA CLASS IN FIVE DAYS!”

Portraiture

How can I say this? Lately, I’ve been feeling proud of my portraits. It’s become a part of my job, and I’m really enjoy it and trying to not look like the totally clueless self-trained bumbler that I am. It’s slow going, but I feel like I’m getting better and have less results that I’m just like “oh, oops. FAIL!”

This video was shot last year, but it captures what I’ve been doing non-stop for the last two days related to this site:

How do you tell which freelance writing postings are legit, and which aren’t? What kind of important probing questions to ask potential clients to make sure that your gig is a) not a scam and b) well-defined with clear boundaries.

First, allow me to be honest here: I’ve never been much of a full-time freelancer. I’m not quite suited for it, really. Freelancing is lonely, isolating work. It’s hard to know when to call it a day, because you can always work more. It pushes me to a weird kind of crazy, where I’m always convinced I’m not working hard enough, and ultimately end up working myself to the bone. Or, you hit a dry month and stay up all night wondering if you’ll ever be able to pay your rent again.

I am sick today, hacking up large rocks of yellow lung butter. But I’m heading to work anyway. Maybe I’ll stay home tomorrow. Motivation for this job has dwindled, now that I know I don’t care.

Hey there. I'm Ariel Meadow Stallings, a native Seattleite who's written my way up and down the Left Coast. Electrolicious is where I post daily randomata, but I also write for a living. My first book, Offbeat Bride, was published last year.
